Location

Invertebrates can be collected from any location that has plants around.

The locations where I typically collected my specimens from were prairies such as ( the Savannah, East prairie, etc), different gardens such as ( Butterfly garden, Grandma's garden, etc) This also included different pond areas. Some specifics are North pond, and South pond.

Procedure

            Field Procedure

  1. Gather all the needed field materials

  2. Fill out the top of the data sheet, recording the relevant environmental conditions

  3. Once you find out the temperature and the humidity use that to determine the heat index.

  4. Start inspecting all parts of the plant including the stem, under the leaf, the flower, top of the leaves, etc

  5. When you find an invertebrate attempt to catch it with a petri dish.

  6. Wrap the collect specimen with tape and with a sharpie label it with:

  • Field number

  • Date

  • Initials

  • Invert type

      7. Complete Epicollect taking down the temperature, invert, location, etc.

      8. Fill out data sheet with name of collected specimens.

      9. Place invertebrates caught in one area in a Ziploc bag

                Lab Procedure

      10. Store invertebrates in a freezer for 24 hours or more.

      11. After invertebrates have been stored properly for freezing start the identification process.

                  12. Fill out a label for the invert collected with the following:

  • Field Number

  • Initials

  • Date

  • Invert type

  • Plant type

                  13. Carefully place invertebrate inside of vial with 91% isopropyl.

                  14. For invertebrates that are larger set them aside for pinning with a label stating the following.

  • Field Number
